As a
result of the coordinated efforts of Rick
Urban Design and Planning and
Rick Engineering Company’s multiple disciplines, the
42.6-acre Nobel Research Center has become one of San Diego’s
premiere addresses for corporate headquarters of industrial
research and
development companies. The document text and technical illustrations
describe 15 building pads ranging from 1.8 to 5.0 acres within
a serene campus of a variety of evergreen trees and flowering
canopy trees on rolling slopes. Coordinated efforts led to approvals
from the City of San Diego’s Planning Department, the University
Community Planning Group, Planning Commission, and City Council.
Topographical and hydrological
issues related to the unique site setting were addressed with
detailed plans for landscape buffers, setbacks, the relationship
between parking and open space, and environmentally-sensitive
lot configuration. A visually harmonious research park has been
constructed from the architectural guidelines that call for complementary
building materials, sensitive building massing, and fenestration
that reflects a corporate image.
The success of the project
can be contributed to sensitive and accurate interpretation of
Municipal Code Industrial Zoning designations as well as to identifying
the applicable guidelines of the governing Community.
