Asian Pacific Thematic Historic District
San Diego, California

The Asia Pacific Thematic Historic District holds a unique location in San Diego both as a historic/cultural site and a tourist attraction. A Master Plan for the area was prepared by CCDC and was adopted in 1995 with the aim of re-establishing the District as the social and cultural destination for the Asian Community.

In 2006 Rick's Urban Design & Planning was selected for the design of site features that created cohesive design themes throughout the district. A major aspect of this plan was to establish Island Avenue as a unifying East/West Street Promenade and to create an Historic Asian Thematic District identity by providing public realm improvements such as gateways, pedestrian lights, landscaping, public art and festival space. Urban Design & Planning, together with Rick's Civil Engineering division was responsible for designing, visioning, and planning as well as surveying, public/ stakeholder consensus meetings, and construction documentation.
